Six Sigma was developed in 1986 by Motorola, Inc. It is an important tool that is mainly focused on quality control and also has a proven methodology that aims to limit or eliminate waste / defects / mistakes in a business process. It emphasizes cycle time improvement while at same time reducing manufacturing defects to a certain level. The sole objective of six sigma is to increase business performance and decrease in process variation, hence the outcome will be improvement in profits, employee morale and better quality of products/services. In six sigma any use of physical resources that does not create value for the end customer is considered as waste and should be immediately eliminated.
The goal is to ensure what processes are prone to variation and reduce those variations to promote continuous improvement. Like all processes have their own methodology, six sigma also has its own methodologies which is
DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve & Control)
Define
Define the goals that will help improve the processes & meet customer demand. Define the focus, scope, direction, and motivation for the improvement team.
Measure
Measure the aspects/data of the ongoing process which is the performance. This will help you measure the frequency of problems arising.
Analyze
Analyze the data that has been accumulated and then verify it, which is determine the root cause for the occurring variation and poor performances.
Improve
Improve the process of data analysis with the help of new techniques (proper documentation & records, 5s etc.). This includes addressing and eliminating the root causes.
Control
Control in order to check that any deviation from the target is corrected before they turn into defects. This simply means have firm control over your improved processes and target improvement in future process performances.
DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyse, Design & Verify)
Define

Analyze
Analyze the data that has been accumulated and then verify it, which is determine the root cause for the occurring variation and poor performances.
Design
Design the details and once that is done, optimize and plan for its verification. Work out details, optimize the methods, run simulations if necessary, and plan for design verification.
Verify
Verify the design and then set up pilot runs (short limited production run). Verification also involves implementing the production process and handing it over to the process owners.
Visual Management can be one of the best tools to improve your six sigma implementation. Its visual tools invite more interest in defining, measuring, analyzing, improving, and controlling important parameters in an organization. Your six sigma expectations and needs can be easily translated into easy to understand visual overviews.
